The HUB Club

During our building phase, the h, u, b in HUB has not only symbolized being the center of activities, but has also been an acronym for Help Us Build.  Now we have a great new meaning for HUB:

HUB CENTER FOR SENIORS – VALUES

H = HOSPITALITY  – Our desire is to create an environment of graceful hospitality, where all are made to feel welcome and valued.

U = UNITYFaith in Action understands the importance of “we”.  Through working together hand in hand with a diverse group of individuals and organizations, we can provide better service to all.HUB-CLUB-LEVEL-PIC-F-B

B = BELONGINGWe value the power of belonging.  We desire the HUB to become a community “extended family” where we reach our individual potential by sharing our talents, our dreams, our lives.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FAQS

What have we built?  A senior/disabled resource center with an attached thrift store.

Where?  111 E. Old Belfair Hwy, 1/4 block down the street from our previous thrift store location:  We are located directly across from Belfair Marine Center.

Do we own the land?  Yes, thanks to matching funds donated to us by Les & Betty Krueger

Please describe it.  2.3 acres of land, approximately 1/3 of which is wetlands or wetland buffer zone.  It is zoned mixed usage, and we now have our wonderful Senior Center and Thrift Store building located on it!

Do we have plans for the wetlands area? In addition to the building, we plan on “constructing” a wheelchair friendly native plant wetlands park.  These projects will fit within the wetlands guidelines.

How much money are we trying to raise?  3.5  million dollars total.  We only need $250,000 more to pay off the final contractor bill and furnish the building.  Then we move on to phase two that will be an estimated $500,000 to complete.

How big is the building? We have planned for nearly 16,000sq. ft.  It includes our 6,000 sq. ft. senior/disabled center, our 6,000sq. ft. thrift store, (both now open for business!), and close to 4,000 sq. feet of upstairs offices and meeting rooms. The upstairs (Phase 2) will be finished and opened at a later date.

Will it be “green”?  Yes, we built to Silver Leed specifications.  We have applied for future certification.

What is included in the senior/disabled center?  A commercial kitchen, a large meeting room, and Faith in Action program offices are currently operational.  Our future Phase 2 expansion will provide smaller meeting/classrooms, exercise room, and office space for other senior related non-profits.

When did you open? May 3rd, 2016

What programs are  planned?

  • We have an agreement with Senior Services of the South Sound to relocate the senior lunches and Meals on Wheels to our facility.
  • Lunches sponsored by other organizations on the days that Senior Services do not.
  • An array of classes and workshops for seniors, the disabled, and their caretakers. These will include:

    • Exercise classes
    • Computer classes
    • Financial literacy classes
    • Cooking/canning classes
    • Craft classes
    • Martial Arts
    • Card Groups
    • Movie Times
    • Health and Wellness Fairs
    • New home of the Belfair Saturday Market
  • Social events such as dances, bingo, game days and more.
  • Fieldtrips to nearby communities for shopping, entertainment and education.
  • Community “pea-patch” gardens, including a raised bed accessible to the wheelchair bound
  • A wheelchair friendly native wetland plants park with benches and areas for meditation

Is the community behind the project? Faith in Action held community meetings, a feasibility study, and a community wide survey.  All showed that North Mason overwhelmingly sees a need for a senior center.

What else did the feasibility study say?  FIA is well respected in our community. The “negatives” were our lack of office space (since solved), the fact that our Board members were not recognized in the community, and some doubt that we have the knowledge and ability to raise the money possible in this economic environment.  As we are now opening the main part of the facility, I would say that doubt has been addressed.
